Be Active, Be Healthy, a plan for getting the nation moving.

Be Active, Be Healthy establishes a new framework for the delivery of physical activity aligned with sport for the period leading up to the London 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games and beyond. It also sets out new ideas for local authorities and primary care trusts (PCTs) to help determine and respond to the needs of their local populations, providing and encouraging more physical activity, which will benefit individuals and communities, as well as delivering overall cost savings. This plan is largely focused on adults, as children and young people’s physical activity is being taken forward through a number of other specific government initiatives.

Health Improvement through workplace health: The role of NHS trusts in London

This research was conducted by a team from The Centre for Workplace Health, St Mary’s University College. In January 2008, the Centre for Workplace Health, on behalf of the London Regional Public Health Group conducted a voluntary online audit of workplace health activity across NHS Trusts in London to identify “where we are now”. The audit aimed to obtain data about the level and type of workplace health activity provided by Trusts and to identify barriers and enablers for such work. As an outcome of the audit this report aims to provide NHS Trusts in London with:

- a summary of the workplace health information gathered through the audit completed by NHS Trusts in London

- an up-to-date summary of the evidence surrounding workplace health

- an overview of good practice in London through case study summaries

- a checklist of key characteristics of healthy workplaces

- appropriate signposting towards existing sources of practical support.

3. Obesity

Tackling Obesity in England - (2001)

The document authors examine the way in which the NHS manages the problem of obesity. They found that many health authorities reflected the problem in their local health planning, and some had dedicated strategies to address it. The National Service Framework for coronary heart disease, published in March 2000, signals the Department of Health's intention to ensure that, in future, all NHS bodies, working closely with local authorities, will develop and implement effective policies for reducing overweight and obesity
